Lego Mindstorms NXT – Waste Disposal (GiantsFanMan11)

This Lego Mindstorms NXT robot is designed to listen for a loud sound (eg a clap) to trigger movement. The robot will toggle between moving forward and rotating. Two light sensors are responsible for finding an object (eg paper) and not falling off of the table. Designed by Steve Whaley and Jacob Beauregard in University of Vermont Computer Science Department.

You could have had paper cups and you could just program it

It also would have been very difficult to make this thing ubiquitous considering the hardware constraints we had.

There is a sound sensor that reacts when it hears sound.

Yea, bidirectional turning with the sensors we were limited to proved far less intuitive, and was not necessary for the avoidance of obstacles since we controlled the testing environment.

(We actually did try it in many different configurations… single-clap vs. double-clap, a modulo 3 clap system, etc. We could have done multicolored flashlights, but we actually dove for a second light sensor because the ultrasonic sensors are no good.)
